I have always dreamed about becoming an immigrant in Japan someday. However, I've heard that Japan does not want immigrants.I am working on receiving a degree in Japanese at a local college, and have been studying Japan and the language for nearly seven years; So I have a lot staked in this question, and would like to hear that it is not true, but...

If I find that the majority of Japanese people are indeed racist towards immigrants/foreigners then I may very well make a change in my life. So, if you are Japanese, are you racist? Thank you

This is probably the worst question to ask a japanese person. I have been to a lot of places in this world, and it has been my experience that asian people tend to be the least open to self-conviction out of any group of people i have interacted with. If you have a question about japan that does not have to do with their culture, the last person you want to ask is a japanese person.

Japan is not Europe/France, people do not talk about introspective issues, nor do they seem to ever think about them.

I think a lot of americans will find japanese "racist" because of our overuse of the word. The typical japanese person you meet has a very strange conception of the world. This ignorance can, and is often, be interpreted as racism.

Edit: @the guy below me, silly that you think my entire experience comes from the internet. Obviously, my experience is with speaking with japanese people in japanese in japan. Duh.

If you think japanese people are some of the most open people in the world, i think you need to get out more. Japan is not like america, or europe, or even south america. People are just not as candid, simple as that. Sorry that you took, and always take offense to my posts lol, but if this is your real opinion about japan then i suggest you go and see more of the world. Japanese that like to insist that japan is 'just like every other country' should stop walking around with their eyes closed. I never said it was a bad thing, i just made an observation. Goodness, you are always so angry.

While I am not Japanese, I have been to Japan multiple times and have talked to many Japanese people.

To answer your question, I will ask another question: Are Americans racist? Sure, some are, usually ones who are from rural areas or ones who have grown up to believe in a certain thing, but not most of the people. The same goes for Japan. While there is a higher percentage of elderly who do not like white people and Americans in general, the younger population really like Americans and think they are really cool.

As a general rule, try to be friendly and everything should work out. The Japanese people will let a lot slide with foreigners just because they understand that they don't understand the culture.

@Mr. Bent Snowman,

why dont you compare the posts of yaho chiebukuro and yahoo answers? you wont acquire any firm knowledge about japanese people by reading posts of some bored japanese people here.

comprehend what i'm saying? if you cant comprehend this then by proof by contradiction your impressions about the japanese will be buncha lies i think. it'll be a different case if you conversed with japanese in english, but should you expect insightful remarks coming spontaneously from japanese speaking in a second language, you are such a fool.

@mr.Paki

hahaha mr. bent snowman, i dont think you have a particulary good command of japanese. i think that you really cant make one decent japanese sentence and that you cant comprehend almost all types of japanese text, including newspapers, magazines, textbook, anything aside from japanese textbooks intended for begginer learners. all i'm saying is maybe you arent at all fair, and the sources of your impressions arent reliable because you suck at japanese.

and may i ask what you are talking about? i didnt think you were talking about openness, candidness, or something like this? and where did i wrote my opinions about japan that disagree with yours? and why do you think i think japan is like every other country, if it is at all possible the two different countries to be alike each other?

are you copying me??

oh another thing, why would i have to take more offense at someone's calling a custom/conditions from another society 'bad' with her own value system, than at an amatuer/rubbish/hackneyed observation of that society? i don't care about another people's value system, meaning i dont care what type of emotional responses people will link to reality out there. i just hope only firm observations will be heard.
