my dad bought a computer called a fujitsu lifebook, it was made in japan and it was very good quality and durable, but it would not run linux because of the harddrive, so he had to get an HP model, the HP one was made in china and is very crappy, I have also noticed this with some other products such as videogames, and japanese cars tend to be more reliable than american ones. So why is it that japanese made things tend to be built better, why cant chinese meet the same standards

You can run Linux even on the Fujitsu computer.

Do you know HP is releasing "made in Japan" servers for enterprise use only?. As for the consumer model, I agree with you.

Lenovo's Thinkpad is still "developed and assembled in Japan", I think.

Japan has been in the manufacturing business much longer and has the experience and know how to make quality products. Only highly educated people are selected for jobs and they take pride in their workmanship. As someone mentioned above, products are also researched, tested and retested before they can pass very rigerous high standards. Japanese also tend to keep things simple rather than make extremely high tech things which may have glitches for years to come (like the US).

One car dealer told me that every Japanese part has a serial number on it which can be traced back to the very team that designed and made the part. If their part should become defective, they would be in a lot of hot water. Italian and German companies are quite similar.

China is still growing in these markets and to some degree, some chinese products are becoming a lot better, but most are far behind.

You should be able in install Linux on any computer if there's room on the hard drive.

Things made in Japan tend to be better made because of working conditions. Japanese are paid far more, and under much better conditions. Workers in China often work 10-16 hours a day, six days a week. For which amounts to about $37 a month. It's not that the Chinese can't do it. It's all about cutting costs down to the bone.

Maybe that's because Japanese don't try to 'cut the corner'? In recent year, a lot of people are discovering why Chinese products are made so cheap because of the working conditions of employees and factory workers. They do almost anything to reduce the cost of manufacturing things. It doesn't happen that in Japan. It is important to save whatever the cost of making and producing things for the consumers, but it doesn't mean they could lower the quality of their products. The Japanese products are generally expensive, but that's why they can maintain the quality of it.

Because when we helped reconstruct Japan after WWII the "Marshal Plan" was very through and taught quality control. The country has quality control built in from the top down.

Well, "you like food", and being Italian myself, so do I. I can only speak for Japanese food and I often buy and cook Japanese myself. Somehow, their products, are healthier than Chinese food. As far as their "computer products" is concerned, I also in my home network, have only Japanese brands. I believe the Japanese manufacturers design and test their products, much better without considering so much how much it costs to produce good and durable machines or appliances.

japan has amazing schools that are very competitive so students learn and study more just trying to get into them.

so japan produces V. smart people.

china employs young people for minimum or below wage who are often children and therefore the workmanship is crappy.
