There are many things that Japan does to prepare.

First is awareness and education.

There is nothing you can do to prevent an earthquake, but the better prepared and aware you are the better chance of survival.

Each city/town has a designated emergency area you can go to in the aftermath of an earthquake. In many cities like where I live, it is usually the local school, since it has auditoriums and open spaces to house large amounts of people.

Because police and fire department personnel will obviously be busy, it is often told to everyone to have an "emergency kit" available at home, things such as flashlight, radio, emergency food and water to get by for several days.

After the Kobe Earthquake in 1995 that virtually destroyed the city, a lot of emphasis has been put into making sure new buildings and older buildings are up to code on earthquake protection. Last year there was a scandal because there was a construction firm that built various hotels, but the hotels were not up to earthquake standards, so the government closed the hotels down.

Sometimes schools and businesses will conduct "earthquake drills" sorta like fire drills in school, where you evacuate and go to a designated area.

So education and awareness is important.

Interesting question. Japan has done quite a bit to study earthquakes, including training. You mentioned the simulator which uses actual earthquake information to simulate any of the major earthquakes and how it may feel. That is being used in schools, community centers and businesses around Japan.

I have posted a link of the listing of earthquakes, usually posted within minutes of the actual event. It also has weather-related information, so a treasure trove of information.

One invention which has come out is a radio device which anyone can purchase for their home. If a tremor is sensed in one area, it figures out how much time it will take to reach the location of that sensor, giving a countdown to the residents/inhabitants when to expect the earthquake.

You will also find a link to a presentation given in 2006 regarding long-term earthquake forecasting and planning. I hope this helps as well.

The third link gives a rather realistic video on earthquakes, and what can be expected in the Tokyo region, for example.

I hope this is a little of what you are looking for.

Unlike California, where most people seem surprised that there would be an earthquake there, Japan is quite aware. There is notification of the actual earthquake on the local television stations in Japan even before the earthquake stops shaking in many cases. Locations are posted within 2-3 minutes, and the magnitude, depth and possibilities of tsunami are posted within 5 minutes.

Don't worry, but be prepared.

They have building dampeners to minimize swaying in large buildings. I think that these were invented in the US, though. I live here, so I know that a lot of the invention is not really ground-breaking. They put geo-isolators on the bottom of some buildings, so the whole building sways on rubber feet instead of directly to the ground. This is also from California, I think.

Finally, the buildings here tend to have a lot of plumbing and wiring run on the outside of the buildings. This way, if the building moves and pipes start to break, or a gas line breaks, it is on the outside of the house or apartment, minimizing problems.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

The school kids are taught about it all the time, and they know what to do and where to go when the quake hits. Each kids should have some kind of head protection(either a hardhat or a thick pillow type head-cover)to wear during the quake. They have trainings often, and every September 1st is the national day for the disaster training. Most of the office buildings in the urban area would conduct escape trainings using by staircases and emergency route. The new buildings are mostly fitted with 'springs' which sways back and forth when the big quake hits, so the building itself won't break in half. Also, the doors at Japanese house and buildings opens outward, rather than inward. This is because it maybe opened easily when the quake hits. When you are inside of the house or building, first thing you should do is to open the door or window, so you won't be stuck inside, if the house structure somehow gets mangled and you won't be able to open the door to escape.

The stoves are automatically turned off too. some newer buildings have the things on the bottom called the "Earthquake Resistant Bracing System"

Inventions...

There are many inventions. But, as far as I know, the sites of inventions are written in Japanese. Can you read them?

1) We will know 10 seconds (ave.) before quake. The wave of earthquake consists of S-wave(main quake) and P-wave(fast and small). If the system catch the p-wave, it calculate the center and scale. And, it will be broadcast on TV/internet/cellphone(new model). This had been tested since several years ago, and has already proved when Chuuetsu Earthquake came.

Cellphone's system: http://www.au.kddi.com/manual/w61sh/misc/misc01.html

2) Above system has already applied to trains. The system stops trains before large quake.

3) If earthquake comes, pieces of glass will fall like rain in urban area. So, anti-quake film for window was developed.

4) In Tokyo, water pipes has been changed to anti-quake type since last year.

5) Furniture stopper, etc...

And, this is a manual for foreigners.
